Your research
The integrated PhD (iPhD) is a PhD programme with an additional year of coursework. It is targeted at students which have attained the research skills necessary for PhD study (e.g. through successful completion of a Masters degree), but require additional specialist training in their subject of study. Due to the variation of Masters programmes across institutions, many students with adjacent degrees (e.g. MA English Language, Applied Linguistics) would benefit from the iPhD programme.
In your first year, you will take 6 modules worth of assessed coursework. Your supervisor will work with you to curate a set of modules for your needs. Where appropriate, you may also be required to take modules in other departments. At the end of your first year, you will work on a 5,000 word independent research project and submit a detailed research proposal. Upon successful progression, you will move into the PhD project phase, where you will undertake a substantial original research project.
The culmination of your PhD will include a dissertation and a viva voce exam. Your dissertation may be in monograph format of 60-80,000 words in length, or by articles, where you will produce at least three works of publishable quality. Your work will be assessed by internal and external examiners during a viva voce examination, who will feed back on your work, and may require corrections.
