Musical theatre is a lively and quickly developing field at the London College of Music, which has over 130 years of excellence in performing arts education.Our PhD Musical Theatre is supported by a dedicated team of staff whose expertise includes practice-led research, advanced professional performance and detailed theoretical and technical analysis. The PhD aims to attract those interested in exploring the connections between music, theatre and movement through scholarly research and creative projects.Research areas in musical theatre cover a broad range, including modern staging techniques, global musical theatre traditions and collaborative efforts with our esteemed music department.We invite applications for doctoral study in both traditional and innovative areas of musical theatre, such as:musical theatre performance and directionchoreography and movement for musical theatrevocal pedagogy and techniquemusical theatre composition and orchestrationcultural studies and identity in musical theatregender, diversity and representation on the musical stagehistorical developments in musical theatremusical theatre pedagogycritical theory and dramaturgy in musical theatrecabaret and hybrid musical formscollaborative devising and ensemble creationnew writing and libretto developmentcommunity-based musical theatre initiatives.

Entry requirements

For international students

The minimum entry requirements for a research degree are:

a good first degree (First Class or Upper Second Class), or equivalent qualification in a relevant field
