What will I learn?

Share your love of learning with the next generation. Get the skills to become a certified elementary school teacher. AU’s School of Education is committed to preparing its students to transform societies through education. You’ll learn from outstanding faculty in small classes that stress experiential learning, and do your student teaching in DC, Maryland, or Virginia. The School of Education (SOE) Undergraduate Teacher Education licensure program prepares students for teaching positions in a variety of PK-12 public, charter, parochial and private school settings. The program blends theory and pedagogy with applied skills to ensure that students are equipped to maximize learning and achievement outcomes for PK-12 students. In each course students are exposed to relevant and rigorous curriculum that advances high leverage teaching practices and culturally responsive pedagogical practices.Offered by the School of Education, the undergraduate program in Elementary Education is designed for students who wish to obtain teaching credentials in elementary education. The major in elementary education offers a licensure specialization that meets certification requirements in the District of Columbia and establishes eligibility for certification in over 40 states. The major in elementary education also offers a non-licensure specialization. Students should consult with the director of Teacher Education to coordinate their general and subject-area certification requirements with other university and major requirements.
