What will I learn?

The Department of English Studies features a fully approved English Language Arts program that prepares candidates to teach grades 9-12 in Illinois public and private schools. The program is approved by the State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board in conjunction with the Illinois State Board of Education and includes all the requirements for a major in English Language Arts. English majors specializing in Concentration One: English Language Arts must declare majors in both English and Secondary Education. See advisors in the Department of English Studies and the Department of Education for specific approval and a list of required courses.Teacher Candidates seeking a Professional Educator License with a English Language Arts Endorsement must complete all requirements of the Department of Education and the following coursework in the content area as well as professional education courses. For a detailed description of the courses, please click on the appropriate link. Only grades of ''C'' and above are acceptable in professional education courses and in any courses counted toward any endorsement or license. A ''C-'' or lower grade will require that the course be repeated. This program is designed to strengthen your analytical, critical, rhetorical, creative, and communication skills. In this major, you’ll develop a sophisticated familiarity with a wide-range of literature, learn digital professional compositions (technical and digital content writing), and expand your creative and imaginative writing skills last, you’ll learn how to educate and instill a passion for reading and writing in young minds everywhere.English majors at Lewis University develop life-long skills that go beyond their classroom studies and into their future careers. Whether the goal is to go into print or digital content writing, editing, publishing, professional writing (technical writing, grant writing, nonprofit writing, digital media, speech writing, and much more!) become an English teacher, or complement another major, the English Studies program helps students develop the skills they need to succeed in all work environments. Such majors are versatile and needed in the workforce the ability to communicate critically, creatively, and professionally is an invaluable skill for your prospects after graduation.
