What will I learn?

Our Five-Year Education Program is available to undergraduates who are interested in pursuing a professional career in teaching. Students in this innovative program earn a bachelor’s degree in an academic major, initial teaching certification and a master’s degree, while participating in a school-based internship or residency during their graduate year. The MAT program for five-year students is a 39-credit program. Five-Year Candidates will apply to the Master of Arts in Teaching program their sophomore year. Students are required to have a minimum GPA of a 2.80 to apply and will take education classes during their junior and senior years. During the fall semester of sophomore year, an information session will be held to review the application process and additional admissions requirements.

Entry requirements

For international students

International students are eligible to apply to the undergraduate program for full-time study at Sacred Heart University if they have completed the equivalent of a United States secondary-school education (approximately twelve years of formal education) and have the appropriate diploma or satisfactory results on leaving examinations.

Five-Year Candidates will apply to the Master of Arts in Teaching program their sophomore year. Students are required to have a minimum GPA of a 2.80 to apply and will take education classes during their junior and senior years. During the fall semester of sophomore year, an information session will be held to review the application process and additional admissions requirements.

For all non-native English speakers, an official English language proficiency examination is required. The following examinations and minimum scores are accepted:

  • TOEFL 80+
  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition: 80
  • TOEFL Essentials: 8.5
  • Academic IELTS 6.5
  • Duolingo 110

  • Completion of ELS 112
  • Completion of EF Level C1
  • Completion of Talk Level 7

  • SHU ESL Program: Score of 90 on exit ESL exam AND successful completion of Level 5 or 6
  • VEPT 5.5
