Majoring or minoring in English helps you develop highly valued professional skills, such as communication, creative thinking, and critical analysis. The flexibility of Iowa State’s English major allows you to create the pathway that best supports your individual goals with courses that range from literature, film, and rhetoric to those in creative writing and English Education. In fact, many students choose to add English as a second major or a minor to diversify the skills they take with them into a career. Graduates from our program enter a range of professions, including law, medicine, publishing and editing , nonprofit and government communication, consulting, and speech writing web design, sales, software documentation, usability, and user experience and scientific, technical, and environmental writing.

Entry requirements

For international students

High school GPA requirement: Equivalent to a minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. For more information on equivalency calculations. Core course requirements: Along with the GPA requirement, students must complete a minimum set of high school core courses, including four years of English (or their native language), three years of science with at least two years of laboratory science in biology, chemistry, and/or physics, three years of mathematics including algebra and geometry, and two years of social studies.
