What will I learn?

The General Construction Emphasis at Pittsburg State University prepares students for careers in the construction industry by combining technical knowledge, construction methods, project management, estimating, safety, and hands-on industry practices. Students develop skills in construction graphics, residential and commercial construction, HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, structural principles, sitework, steel, concrete and masonry construction, materials testing, surveying, and civil construction. The curriculum also emphasizes construction cost management, estimating, project planning, scheduling, contract administration, safety, quality control, and construction supervision. Students gain practical experience through laboratory-based coursework, computer applications, construction design projects, and a required construction internship or cooperative education experience. The program also includes a senior capstone project that integrates construction design, methods, cost analysis, specifications, contracts, and project organization. Students can further specialize through coursework in areas such as residential design and management, construction codes and inspections, BIM/VDC, construction supervision and leadership, surveying, BIM management, and civil construction. Through this comprehensive combination of technical education, practical training, and industry-focused coursework, graduates are prepared to contribute effectively to residential, commercial, industrial, and civil construction projects.
