What will I learn?

The DNP Nurse Anesthetist Program is only offered as a full-time program, and students are required to take 88 credits over 3 years or 9 continuous semesters in anesthesia specialty, clinical practicum, core doctoral nursing, and DNP project courses. Nurse anesthesia practice covers the continuum of care from preanesthetic assessment to discharge from the recovery unit. Nurse anesthesia students at WVU are prepared by clinical practice in team-based models at academic medical centers and community hospitals and through rotations at critical access hospitals across West Virginia. The DNP Project is a scholarly exploration of a practice-based problem and the best evidence to resolve it. WVU DNP students, including DNP nurse anesthesia students, conduct the projects as members of a team consisting of the student, a clinical consultant and a DNP Project Faculty of Record. School of Nursing and nurse anesthesia program doctoral faculty serve as the FOR mentors, guiding students through development, implementation, and dissemination of their evidence-based practice initiatives.

For international students

To be eligible for the Nurse Anesthesia graduate program, applicants must submit three letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose, along with a bachelor's or graduate degree in nursing from a nationally accredited nursing program and regionally accredited institution, a minimum nursing GPA and cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and a satisfactory background check and drug screen before the first day of classes. Applicants also need at least 1 year (preferably 2-3 years) of current, full-time critical care experience after orientation, American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification (with PALS required before beginning clinical activities), and a current, unencumbered RN or APRN license, with proof of an active, unrestricted WV nursing license required and licensure in Maryland, Ohio, and/or Pennsylvania possibly needed during the program. Shadowing a CRNA before applying is strongly recommended, and competitive applicants will be invited for an interview, which is required for admission, though admission is competitive and those meeting minimum requirements may still be denied based on program capacity or academic discretion.

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
