What will I learn?

The Ph.D. in Global Studies at UMass Lowell is an interdisciplinary program, based in the Department of Political Science, designed to prepare you for advanced research on global challenges. With expert faculty from diverse fields-political science, economics, education, history, philosophy, psychology and sociology-you’ll gain a broad and integrated perspective on global issues. The Ph.D. program in Global Studies offers three areas of concentration to meet the specific research interests of students. Equipped with strong theoretical and empirical understanding of global issues, you'll graduate prepared for careers in academia, government, non-profits and policy think tanks.

Entry requirements

For international students

  • A statement of purpose of about 750 words addressing: 1) Your background and motivation for applying to the program 2) Your research area of interest and potential research project
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can comment on your academic potential (minimum of two academic references).
  • A resume
  • A writing sample such as a published article, thesis, etc.
  • Official transcripts
  • Official test scores

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • All prior degrees must have been earned with a satisfactory scholastic average to demonstrate that the applicant has adequate preparation for the field in which doctoral studies are undertaken
  • An interview may be requested by the Graduate Admissions Committee
