The program develops equity-oriented and principled leaders in higher education who understand the urban context, foster racial justice, promote equity and diversity, and use research and theory to help higher education institutions and individuals within them thrive.The experiences, knowledge and skills gained from this program can prepare graduates for the competitive pursuit of positions in public or private institutions. Graduates could find opportunities in entry level and mid-level college and/or university leadership positions. Potential areas of professional opportunity include residence life and campus housing, student activities, Greek affairs, recreation center/sports, academic advising, admissions, financial aid, and administrative support. In addition, the transferable knowledge and skills of this program could help graduates pursue opportunities outside of a college or university setting. Another option and benefit of the program is preparation for a doctoral program.Students who accomplish the program learning objectives will be able to demonstrate:Analyze the role higher education organizations play in urban settings and describe the ways in which urban institutions reciprocally influence, interact with, and change cities.Critically evaluate and analyze research and theory and apply this knowledge directly to equity-oriented and racially-just practices that contribute to student thriving in urban higher education.Develop a knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods and their appropriate application in assessment and evaluation of programs, policies, and practices.Apply knowledge of the foundations of higher education, including a basic knowledge of the history, politics, and structure of higher education to develop an informed position on current critical topics in the field.
