What will I learn?

Our program prepares you to make a difference by giving you the tools you need to educate today’s youth. You’ll graduate with experience, skills, and knowledge that are in high demand. Become a teacher in: Agricultural and Life Sciences Education (5-12), Physical Education (K-12), Family and Consumer Sciences Education (5-12), Music Education (K-12), K-12 and Secondary Education, English (5-12), Mathematics (5-12), Biology (5-12), Chemistry (5-12), Earth Science (5-12), Physics (5-12), French (5-12), German (5-12), Spanish (5-12), History/Social Sciences (5-12). If you are interested in pursuing secondary education (teaching in a middle school or high school) or K-12 education, you will need to choose a major in your area of interest and enroll in the college where your major is located. Our secondary education program prepares students to teach at the middle and high school levels by encouraging you to become an expert in your subject matter by majoring in that subject. Iowa State University has 13 undergraduate teacher preparation areas at Iowa State University. Our secondary education program provides students the opportunity for clinical experience aligned with your coursework early on in the program. The secondary and K-12 program areas offered by our Educator Preparation Program and their corresponding grade levels are listed below, along with the college where the program resides and where you can find information on the required curriculum.

Entry requirements

For international students

High school GPA requirement: Equivalent to a minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. For more information on equivalency calculations. Core course requirements: Along with the GPA requirement, students must complete a minimum set of high school core courses, including four years of English (or their native language), three years of science with at least two years of laboratory science in biology, chemistry, and/or physics, three years of mathematics including algebra and geometry, and two years of social studies.

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
