What will I learn?

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree in Secondary Education is an accelerated teacher licensure program that leads to initial teacher certification in a designated content area and a master’s degree. It is designed for those already holding an undergraduate degree and interested in becoming a secondary school teacher. Content areas include: Math, Life Science, Physical Science, English, Social Studies, and World Languages. The MAT program prepares graduates for teaching positions at the secondary school level (grades 7-12). Our faculty have expertise in a variety of educational disciplines and contexts, from Social Studies and STEM Education to rural and urban school settings. No matter your education career goals, the MAT will help you achieve them.

Entry requirements

For international students

A bachelors degree is required for ALL masters, C.A.S., Ed.S., and doctoral programs.Official transcript of all previous college or university workApplications are processed through the University of Maine Graduate School. A bachelors degree in a designated content area, 3.0 GPA, three letters of recommendation, and passing Praxis I score are required for admission to the MAT. Applications are accepted on a rolling or ongoing basis.
