Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) with a major in Special Education consists of course work in special education and a cognate or minor, depending upon the program of study. A student may pursue a master’s in generic special education, a master’s in special education with concentration, or a master’s in special education plus teaching certification. Concentration areas include autism/applied behavior analysis, behavioral disorder/positive behavioral supports, and learning disabilities/inclusion. A student pursing a degree in special education can seek a Texas State certificate in autism, behavioral disorders/positive behavioral supports, or learning disabilities/inclusion. Certificate programs range from 18-21 semester hours, most of which are included in the master’s program.The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires multiple background checks for progression through the Educator Preparation Program. Based on information recorded in your criminal history, you may be ineligible for issuance of a teaching certificate upon completion of the Educator Preparation Program.The mission of the special education program is to prepare educators and specialists who apply current, evidence-based practices in special education for the purpose of preparing individuals with disabilities to live independent, responsible and personally satisfying lives in a diverse, global society. Graduates engage in practitioner inquiry and research, serve as leaders in special education policy and classroom practice, and apply their knowledge and skills to positively influence the inclusion of, and support for, persons who require the best professional practices of special education.
