ARC Grant

In the November 2018 Australian Research Council (ARC) grants round, Macquarie University was awarded over AUD 14 million, which is used on over 38 multi-disciplinary projects on varied subjects such as planetary evolution, lateralisation of brains, history of Australian businesswomen and lots more.

A total of over AUD 380 million was declared by The Hon Dan Tehan MP (the Minister for Education) through the ARC, as a part of the Government’s funds for Macquarie University research projects.

Emphasising on the importance that Macquarie University devotes to research, Professor Sakkie Pretorius, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) said the ARC grants were recognition not only of Macquarie’s past exceptional research performance but of Macquarie’s potential across a diverse set of research projects.

“The result demonstrates the rich research environment at the university that encourages our academics to greatness across a range of fields. Successful grant applications take an extraordinary amount of time and dedication and the outstanding result is testament to the research quality produced by Macquarie academics,” he added.

Study options

Study options

International students in Macquarie University have an extensive range of interdisciplinary degrees to choose from. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across subjects including business, engineering & IT, health & medical sciences, environment, law & security, media, history, languages, art, science and education. The degrees are crafted with an emphasis on employability and industrial knowledge.

There are two ways in which Macquarie’s undergraduate courses are designed. On one hand, students taking up certain courses must complete the units in a particular sequence in order to graduate. On the other hand, there are other courses, which provide students a broad range of majors to choose from, in their fields of study.

However, students of postgraduate level benefit from more flexibility, as they can customise the coursework and research programmes to incorporate modules that don’t relate to their primary focus field.

Besides undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, Macquarie University also offers its students options such as study abroad programmes, research programmes and internships. With so many options, Macquarie University’s focus is to cater to the needs of all its students.

Masters (by coursework)

General pre-requisites for international students applying for master’s programmes include a bachelor’s degree from a standard university that is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an Australian university.

The specific requirements vary with the courses. Some requirements include prior work experience in the field and an advanced educational qualification such as a bachelor’s degree with honours.

Students will also have to meet the specific Grade Point Average (GPA) to enrol for most of the master’s (by coursework) courses. The GPA indicates the average academic performance of the students in their bachelor’s course.

For international students to identify the equivalences for the grading system, the university has listed out grading schemes used in 25 countries against the Macquarie’s 7-point GPA system. For those countries without a GPA system, the list also includes the minimum pass standard that is required.

Masters (by research)

Academic research experience is one of the mandatory criteria for students applying for master’s (by research) or PhD programmes in Macquarie University. More information regarding other eligibility conditions can be found on the university’s higher degree research page.
