BCU visits Hotcourses india

The Birmingham City University (BCU) is on e of the top-notch universities in the world, providing world-class facilities to its students. It has a long cherished history, starting with five individual colleges from 1843 to 1971 and slowly acquiring a University status in 1992. The University grew tremendously and in 2007 the name ‘Birmingham City University’ came into play. BCU is situated at the heart of the United Kingdom and is home to 24,000 students from across 80 countries. According to the Complete University Guide of BCU , nearly 23,000 students were enrolled during the 2014–15 academic year.

The University’s academic, teaching and research standards are high and commendable. They reflect the sheer number of brilliant minds and their hard-working attitudes.

On 30 November, 2016, a representative from the Birmingham City university visited the Chennai office of Hotcourses India to have a quick chat with the counselling team. Here are the questions that were asked by us:

Q: How many Indian students are currently studying at the University?

A: Currently, BCU represents 11% of international student population, with roughly 100 international students at the Department of Computer Science.

Q: Does the University accept 15 years of education?

A: Yes, definitely.

Q: What scholarships are on offer for international students?

A: Nearly 1500£ for a PG (masters) degree and from 1000£ to 3000£ for an UG (bachelors) degree.

Q: What are the main USPs of the University?


  • The University has a lot of tie-ups with giant companies like the Cape Gemini, Microsoft, IBM and Apple.
  • Admission through IELTS waiver is also possible.
  • The University launched its music conservatoire called ‘ Birmingham Conservatoire’ which specialises in  music technology.

Q: Does the University offer any internship opportunities for international students? If yes, what type of internships and what are the prerequisites to apply for them?

A: Yes, it does.

Almost all UG courses come with industrial exposure. Prerequisites vary!

Q: Which courses at the University are most popular amongst Indian students?

A: Business-related courses at the University are most popular amongst Indian students.

Q: Does the University encourage Distance Education?

A: Yes, provided the Distance Learning provider is a well-recognised one.

Q: Which education boards/universities are exempted from applying at the University?

A: There is no such thing like exempting different boards/universities; it accepts all boards.

Q: What are the major requirements of applying at the University?

A: A minimum percentage of 55 in UG and 60 in PG is essential. Minimum IELTS/TOEFL/PTE band required is 6, and not less than 5.5 in any standardised tests.

Q: Does the University accept a year gap?

A:  Yes, provided the student gives valid explanations for such attempt.

Q: What would be the average cost of accommodation at the campus?

A: On-campus accommodations are available which range from 105£ to 114£ per week.

Q: Are there any career placement services/support offered by the University? If yes, what are those?

A: Yes, we do have a career placement officer who helps students in editing their CV (or resume) and in preparing them for job interviews; they are also involved in conducting several employment workshops.

Q: Are students with backlogs accepted at the University?

A: Depends on many factors.

Q: How much is the tuition cost?

A: A typical UG degree costs nearly 9000£ per year, and for a PG degree it will cost nearly 10,500£ per year.

Q: Are there any admission/application deadlines?

A: No, there are no deadlines as such.

In addition to this, the BCU representative gave us some quick updates on the Department of Computer Science: it has a new course on offer called MSci in Computer Forensics and MSci in Computer Science is the new name for a masters programme in Computer Science.
