The University of Manitoba (UM) was founded in 1877 and has, over the course of nearly a century and a half, evolved into one of Canada’s premier research universities. The university draws people from all around the world, with students, researchers and alumni bringing their unique voices to learning and exploration, shaping new ways of doing things and impacting important conversations in topics relevant to our times, from global health to climate change.
UM is home to over 30,000 students and more than 9,000 faculty and staff. The university’s two main campuses — Fort Garry and Bannatyne — are accessible and inclusive. They feature traditional and contemporary architecture, expansive green spaces and state-of-the-art facilities. UM also has multiple satellite campuses across the province and research locations around the globe.

Graduates of the University of Manitoba are well prepared on the completion of their studies for future career success in a wide range of fields. In addition to providing co-ops, placements and exchange opportunities, the university helps its students to prepare for their professional career with a one-to-one careers support program. Manitoba students can meet with a career consultant during their time at the university for personalised career planning sessions. Career consultants help UM students connect their interests and skills to potential employment pathways during these confidential discussions. They work with students to help them determine a degree pathway that corresponds with their profession goals, advise them on career decisions, and signpost work placements and experiential learning opportunities.
The university also operates the Career Mentor Program, which has been specially designed to help students make the next steps towards their preferred career by connecting them with experienced industry professionals. Mentors on the program help students to create careers plans and provide insight into potential future career pathways.
The University of Manitoba has announced sizeable investments in its learning and research facilities as part of its 2024-25 budget plan. The annual budget will support the university’s strategic priorities in a number of innovative ways, with a total investment of 24.2 million CAD being made in resources, programs and infrastructure. New investments include over 5 million CAD in total to financially support students at all levels of study, including international students. An additional 1.1 million CAD will also be invested in ‘creating knowledge that matters’, as part of a multi-year program which will support interdisciplinary team research grants and research competitiveness.
The University of Manitoba are ‘beaming with pride’ at the number of its alumni competing and coaching at the 2024 Olympics and 2024 Paralympics. The fantastic achievements of its alumni at the Olympics and Paralympics reflect the strength of the university’s sports programs.
UM alumni at the 2024 Olympics include swimmer Kelsey Wog, soccer player Desiree Scott, men’s golf coach Derek Ingram, and women’s soccer sport science lead Chloe Werle. At the Paralympics, UM alumni are represented by the wheelchair basketball mental health lead Lindsay Berard and the women’s wheelchair basketball coach Michèle Sung.

The University of Manitoba provides its students with over 35 million CAD worth of financial support opportunities each academic year.
International students studying at UM have access to a range of funding programs at the university. These include entrance scholarships and a range of other financial awards including bursaries in the second year of study.
The International Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship is awarded to international students who have achieved a minimum high school grade average of 85 percent or over in select academic courses. Students with averages greater or equal to 85 percent can receive an award of 1,000 CAD, while 90 percent or over may entitle students to a scholarship of 2,000 CAD, and 96 percent or over 3,000 CAD – if students meet the relevant applicability criteria. The university also offers an International Undergraduate Student Scholarship and International Student Bursaries, in addition to entrance awards and graduate awards. International students applying to the University of Manitoba are required to demonstrate their English language proficiency if English is not their primary language, or if they completed their previous education in a different language. This is to ensure that international students can suitably meet the demands of assignments, lectures, classroom instruction and tutorials at the university. International students applying for undergraduate programs are required to meet the general academic admission requirements, based either on their country of prior study or their prior curriculum of study. Students will also need to meet program-specific requirements of study, which vary on a course-by-course basis.
