Today's discoveries in the biomolecular sciences lead to tomorrow's applications in fields ranging from medicine and healthcare to food, agriculture, environmental protection and the biotechnology industries.

Biomolecular science is the most rapidly developing area in science at the crossroads of the biological, chemical, physical and computational sciences that are driving the current extraordinary advances across biotechnology and medicine. It encompasses chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, the new genetics, genetic engineering, genomics and proteomics, structural and systems biology and bioinformatics.

This advanced program is designed to train a new generation of biomolecular scientists to meet industry requirements for professional, workplace ready, research-ready graduates with high-level expertise and skill.

The program gives you a unique opportunity to be immersed in cutting-edge research during your undergraduate studies, with the flexibility to undertake a fourth year level research track, or to exit after successful completion of third year level with a Bachelor of Biomolecular Science.

Bachelor of Biomolecular Science (Honours) (Cricos: C)


The Bachelor of Biomolecular Science (Honours Program) is offered full-time and part-time on-campus at the Nathan campus (Biosciences and Medicinal Chemistry specialisations) and at the Gold Coast campus (Drug Discovery specialisation). You may choose to study courses at other campuses if or where the program structure allows. Project work will commence on the first Monday in February for Trimester 1 entry and the first Monday of Trimester 2 for Trimester 2 entry.

In the Bachelor of Biomolecular Science (Honours) Program, you must normally maintain a full-time study load. If you have reasons why you cannot maintain enrolment in 40 credit points per trimester, you must seek approval from the Program Director to take a reduced study load.

Students enrolling in the Bachelor of Biomolecular Science (Honours) Program are required to complete coursework and a dissertation.

Coursework: You are required to attend approximately 2-6 hours of scheduled classes per week per 10 credit point course. Classes may be held during the day and evening.

Dissertation: During your enrolment in the dissertation component of this program, it is expected that you will be able to work independently for most of the time. The requirement for on-campus attendance is relatively flexible and unstructured. However, you will be required to meet regularly with your supervisor and it is recommended that you discuss the on-campus attendance requirements with your supervisor at the start of the dissertation.

Intensive study periods: It is compulsory to enrol in some safety courses in the intensive mode. Intensive courses are delivered in short blocks of five days, usually from 9am to 5pm on weekdays during Orientation Week. It is expected that if you enrol in the program you will be available to attend.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Standard academic entry to our undergraduate degrees requires completion of secondary school comparable to Australian Year 12 or equivalent academic achievement. ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTS: We accept the following English tests for standard entry into undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs. IELTS: minimum score of 6.5, with no sub score less than 6.0 or TOEFL: a minimum score of 575 or Internet-based (IBT) TOEFL: a score of 79 (no sub-score less than 19) or Pearson Test of English (Academic): an overall score of 58 with no score less than 50.

For international students

Standard academic entry to our undergraduate degrees requires completion of secondary school comparable to Australian Year 12 or equivalent academic achievement. Students from other countries should have country specific requirements equivalent to Australia.

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are as follows: A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.0 OR a minimum score of 575 on TOEFL OR an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79 (no sub-score less than 19) OR no score less than 3+ in each skill of the ISLPR (conducted by ISLPR Language Services only) OR a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) OR a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) OR an overall score of 58 in the Pearson Test of English (Academic) with no score less than 50.
