What will I learn?

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) / Bachelor of Exercise Science is a 360 credit point double degree, taken in 4.5 years full-time (or equivalent part-time) designed for students wishing to pursue a career in education with a specialisation in Physical Education, Personal Development or Health Education in a secondary setting in government, non-government or independent secondary schools.

In ACT, Qld and Victoria a Bachelor of Exercise Science sequence and units are available and students have a choice of their major and minor sequences. Students are advised to select these sequences from main school teaching areas. There is also a major Education sequence.

The Bachelor of Teaching requirements foster the acquisition and development of the basic professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required of an effective classroom teacher. The Bachelor of Exercise Science core content provides an extensive knowledge base of how the human body works, from a psychological, anatomical, physiological, motor control and biomechanical perspective, with a specific focus on the role of exercise in health, well-being and performance.

Professional experience

The current requirements are for a minimum of 80 days of professional experience that occurs in structured supervised settings.

Work placement

All initial teacher education programs must include a defined period, or professional experience, where pre-service teachers practise teaching in a school under the direct supervision and guidance of an appropriately qualified teacher. In order to graduate, pre-service teachers must satisfy all the requirements of their program, including the professional experience requirements. Supervised professional experience is at the heart of all our pre-service teacher education courses and the Faculty will find appropriate placements to suit the needs of your course. Placements will usually be arranged for the scheduled placement period in the professional experience calendar though this may not always be possible.

Careers

Our graduates have pursued careers in:

  • secondary schools as a PE, HOPE and HPE teacher, including Catholic, government and independent settings
  • institutes of technical and further education (TAFE)
  • vocational education
  • community education centres
  • private colleges
  • special education settings

Students with a Student Visa will need to complete the program in minimum duration, study at least one subject on-campus each semester and must not undertake more than 33% of the program online.

For students from United States

High School Diploma with minimum total score of 1370 for SAT I Critical Reading, SAT I: Mathematical and SAT I: Writing test scores (2015 and earlier);High School Diploma with minimum total score of 1040 for SAT I Critical Reading, SAT I: Mathematical and SAT I: Writing test scores (2016 onwards). Applicants must have must have the equivalent of an Australian Year 12 Certificate. English Language Requirements: Overall IELTS score of 6.0 (with an individual score of 6.0 in writing and speaking; 5.5 in listening and reading); Pearson Test of English (PTE): 50 with a minimum of 50 in writing and speaking and a minimum of 42 in reading and listening; Test of English as a Foreign Language - Academic (TOEFL): Internet based total of 60: minimum 21 in writing, 18 in speaking, 8 in reading and 7 in listening; ACU English Language Test: C (60-64%); Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): Overall CAE of 169 (Minimum score of 169 in writing and speaking and 162 in listening and reading).

For international students

Applicants require the equivalent of Australian Year 12 certificate

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A minimum of 7.0 in Reading and Writing and a minimum of 7.5 in listening and speaking

Pearson Test of English (PTE): A minimum of 65 in reading and writing and a minimum of 73 in listening and speaking

Test of English as a Foreign Language - Academic (TOEFL): Internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT) with a minimum of 27 in reading, 29 in writing, 27 in listening and 24 in speaking

ACU English Language Test: A+ (80 or above)

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): A minimum of 185 in reading and writing and a minimum of 191 in listening and speaking.
