What will I learn?

Hone professionally relevant communication and creative skills while learning about the roles, messages and impacts of social media, entertainment, advertising and the news in society.Communications and digital media are everywhere and in everything. Journalists, public affairs officers, content creators, entertainment makers, branding experts, digital storytellers, social media influencers, consumers, citizens and activists use all kinds of media every day to produce, send and receive digital messages and images about the world, to change it in some way. In the Communications and Digital Media Studies (CDMS) program, you will develop specialized knowledge about the fast-changing communication and digital media environment in which we live, work, shop and play, analyze the social dimensions and impacts of many media forms and hone professional communication and digital media skills linked to thousands of new and exciting careers. You will become a strong communicator who is able to present your ideas in a variety of forms such as research essays, case studies, journals, blogs, videos, digital stories, memes and mini-TED Talks.Career opportunities - Advertising Expert, Communications Specialist/Officer, Content Creator, Creative DirectorExperiential learningA limited number of fourth-year students have an opportunity to participate in a learning experience with a community organization. The practicum is an experiential learning tool that provides students with opportunities to acquire workplace skills and knowledge, confront the relationship between theory and practice, and cultivate a sense of personal and professional development. The practicum course consists of 100 hours of fieldwork, several in-class seminars and a set of academic assignments.

Entry requirements

For international students

Entry requirements may vary from country to country. Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M courses, including English (ENG4U).

English language requirement:

IELTS: Overall score of 6.5 with no sub-score less than 6.0 (Education and Nursing programs require an overall score of 7.0).

TOEFL: Internet-based test (iBT) with a total score of 83 (Education and Nursing programs require a total score of 87), and minimum scaled scores of Listening: 20; Reading: 20; Speaking: 19; and Writing: 20

Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Minimum score of 58.

Cambridge English - Advanced: Minimum score of 180 with no band lower than 170.
