Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Women Studies (Honours)

Canada

What will I learn?

The Department of Sociology offers programs leading to Bachelor, Honours Bachelor, and Master of Arts degrees. Sociology honours degrees are available in a double major with Women's Studies and a major concentration in Gerontology. Sociology programs are also offered concurrently with a BEd from the Department of Undergraduate Studies in Education. The honours bachelor degree program is offered at both campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia. The bachelor degree is offered at the Thunder Bay campus and is available at the Orillia campus as a non direct-entry program.Sociologists regard all human behaviour as social. As a Sociology major at Lakehead University, you will have the opportunity to study social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behaviour. Issues related to health and illness, health care, the law, crime and delinquency, popular culture and everyday life, the implications of changing technologies, education, and inequalities are just some of the topics analysed in our courses. You will also be able to study and discuss the ideas and insights of the founders of sociology as well as those of contemporary thinkers who examine present-day social life. You can master essentials of social research - how to design questionnaires, conduct effective interviews, and carry out meaningful surveys. Our Sociology faculty members engage in active research programs in areas as diverse as health, culture, media, gender, critical gerontology, education, the law, and the Northwestern Ontario region.
