Humber’s Bachelor of Social Science – Criminal Justice Honours Degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system, approaches to analyzing global issues and opportunities to evaluate societal and individual responses to crime. Supported by a faculty team with diverse researching and in-field experience, the curriculum combines both theory and applied practice to provide an interdisciplinary experience for learners. Emphasis is placed on exploring mechanisms of systemic discrimination as they relate to the criminal justice system and the experiences of marginalized groups. Additional areas of inquiry include psychological understandings of offending and current social justice issues. In the first year of study, students participate in a social science foundational year with their peers from the Faculty of Social & Community Services. In Years 2 through 4, the curriculum addresses many topics related to the criminal justice system. Knowledge and critical skills will be developed through collaborative group projects and presentations to help prepare for a variety of fast-paced and dynamic work settings within the justice field. Students will also complete a work-integrated learning credit (offered part-time or full-time). This hands-on learning opportunity fosters the development of practical skills among our learners and provides skills related to networking and professional development. Humber’s multidisciplinary teaching approach emphasizes critical thinking, analytical and organizational skills, research, and strong writing competencies. These are combined with the development of professional skills including communication, interpersonal skills, conflict management, problem solving, team building and leadership.
