Summary

Description

This program develops the skills and knowledge you need to effectively manage the health information required for patient care, administration, research, and education. The program trains you in the specialized techniques required in health information management. It offers a unique combination of medical, computer, and business courses.

Emphasis during the program will be on the following:

  • Health information science
  • Medical terminology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Medical coding
  • Computerization
  • Statistical analysis

As a graduate you will be eligible to write the national certification exam administered by the Canadian Health Information Management Association. Successful certification allows you to seek employment across Canada.

Who Should Enrol?

This program will appeal to you if you want to combine your interest in the health care field with medical, computer and business skills.

You could be well suited for this program, if you possess the following traits:

  • strong organizational skills
  • ability to maintain confidentiality

  • previous work experience in a Healthcare setting, in particular a Health Information Department would be a definite asset.

This program is academically demanding, and you should be prepared to set aside time on a regular basis to complete projects and assignments outside of daily class hours. The workload will vary from term to term and students must be self disciplined to keep up with the demands of the program. .

Entry requirement for international students

  • Submit proof of successful completion of or enrolment in Grade 12, including one credit of:
  • Grade 12 Biology 40S or
  • Grade 12 Chemistry 40S
  • Due within 30 days of applying. However, if you apply within six weeks of the start date of the program, this item is due within 5 days of applying.
  • If you provide proof of enrolment, your official final grades indicating successful completion must be submitted by July 15 for fall enrolment or by the deadline specified in your admission letter
  • One credit of Grade 12 Applied Math 40S or Pre-Calculus Math 40S is not required but is strongly recommended.
  • If you completed your education outside of Canada or the United States, do not submit your international academic credentials until requested to do so. See Regular Admission Requirement 2 for more information.

English Language Requirements:

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Certificate - exit Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels from one of the following RRC courses:

Academic English Program for University and College Entrance (AEPUCE*) (AEPL-1001):
Listening 8, Speaking 8, Reading 8, Writing 8
*Students will also require a letter of recommendation from the AEPUCE instructor to meet the English language requirement or
Communication for Health Professions (EALN-1013): Listening 8, Speaking 8, Reading 8, Writing 8 or
Communication for Internationally Educated Health Professionals (COIN-1001): Listening 8, Speaking 8, Reading 8, Writing 8
LINC certificates from other courses/programs will not be accepted or

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS - Academic): Listening 7.0, Speaking 7.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 or
  • Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTEST): Listening 5.0, Speaking 4.5, Reading 5.0, Writing 4.5
