What will I learn?

The Department of Economics at the University of Alberta offers three graduate programs in Economics: a 12 month course-based MA in Economics, a 24 month course-based MA in Economics and Finance, and a PhD program. Our MA programs provide students with the theoretical and applied skills needed to enter the workforce or continue in a PhD program.Graduates of our MA programs who continue their education enter PhD programs in Economics and Finance at a number of universities, including the Universities of Alberta, Calgary, Toronto, and Western Ontario. Graduates from out PhD program have found positions at Mount Royal University, MacEwan University, Wilfred Laurier University, and the University of Regina as well as provincial and federal governments.The Department of Economics provides a thesis based PhD program in which students develop competency in the core areas of economics as well as mastery in their chosen fields.

Entry requirements

For international students

The Department's minimum admission requirements are an MA in Economics with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last 60 of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework. In addition, applicants must have grade point average of 3.2 on all MA coursework.
