What will I learn?

Professional NZSL-English interpreters are in high demand. NZSL-English interpreters are essential to ensure the Deaf community has access to New Zealand legal, educational and health systems. This major prepares you for a career as an NZSL-English interpreter. You become familiar with the Deaf community and culture, and helping you achieve proficiency in New Zealand Sign Language. In the second and third year you’re introduced to the interpreting profession, including the history of interpreting locally and internationally. You develop interpreting skills for a wide range of settings, and explore the ethical issues of sign language interpreting.

Entry requirements

For international students

University Entrance or equivalent. Higher School Certificate Apply if you have: A grade of C or higher in each of three subjects of the New Zealand University Entrance, Bursaries and Scholarships (NZUEBS) examinations; or A combination of NZUEBS A, B or C grades and have completed equivalent subjects registered on the National Qualifications Framework; or At least 13 credits at Level 3 from the National Qualifications Framework in each of 3 approved subjects from the approved list You must have achieved the IB Diploma (24 points) High level of competency in English (NZSL fluency is not required). Interview will be required.
