What will I learn?

In this postgraduate diploma, you will balance independent creative work in the studio with learning in Maori studies or museum studies. You will spend most of your time making art. If you have more than 10 years of exhibition practice you can apply to do a studio-only postgraduate diploma-talk to us about your situation. The Maori Visual Arts qualification embraces both customary and contemporary practices. That could range from carving to weaving to kowhaiwhai and contemporary practice. The work coming out of Toioho ki apiti often asks critical questions about identity and visual culture and exists at the interface of ‘Western’ and ‘indigenous’ art. You can study on campus, with studio space provided, or by distance. Full-time and part-time options are available, so you can fit study around work and whanau commitments.

This is a selected entry qualification. This means there are a number of extra requirements you must meet. To enter the Postgraduate Diploma in Māori Visual Arts you willhave been awarded or qualified for a Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts orhave been awarded a relevant bachelors degree and provide evidence of appropriate professional experience and duration orsufficient practical professional and scholarly experience at an appropriate level.You are required to provide a portfolio if you have not completed a Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts with Massey University.You must also provide copies of all official academic transcripts for studies taken at all universities other than Massey University.In considering applications for admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Māori Visual Arts the University shall pay due regard to indigenous systems for the acquisition of knowledge and shall apply a fair large and liberal interpretation to the concepts of scholarly experience and academic work.
