What will I learn?

This programme is for those who want to extend their knowledge in sport and exercise science, and is designed to build on an undergraduate degree or equivalent industry experience with further specialist knowledge. Our postgraduate sports programmes focus on applied learning, are strongly industry-focused, and supported by a team of highly-skilled academic staff. Students will get to apply their learning in our purpose-built facilities. Graduates may be employed in specialised roles in sport science research the fitness industry individual and team sport training and consultancy and regional and national sporting organisation positions. Example roles include strength and conditioning coach, clinical exercise physiologist, and performance analyst.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants are required to have gained:

  • an undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science with a grades average of B or better in the final year of full-time study (or equivalent in part-time study), conferred by a New Zealand tertiary education institution, or
  • a qualification with a grades average of B or better in the final year of full-time study (or equivalent in part-time study), industry experience and/or informal transfer of credit approved as equivalent by the Sport Science Postgraduate Programme Committee.

English Language Requirements

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.5, with no individual band score lower than 6.0; or

  • TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) score of 79 (with a writing score of 21)
  • TOEFL Paper-based Test (pBT) score of 590 (with an essay score of 5.5 TWE)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) score of 58 with no band score lower than 50

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
