What will I learn?

This course is for you if you have experience, or are considering a career, in the development field. Our experts work at the intersection of social anthropology and development studies. Globally, Sussex is well-known for its teaching and research in international development. You'll also be part of one of the UK's largest Anthropology departments.Anthropologists approach development at a human scale. They do this through immersive field research and observation. This approach generates fresh insights into complex global challenges. You'll learn to understand the experiences of those most affected by these challenges.You'll be able to pursue your own interests in the anthropology of development. This may include the environment, health, poverty, humanitarianism or rights.The MA focuses on issues of anthropological engagement, development policy and activism. You will:learn from anthropology experts who are applying their research to real-world scenariosput theory into practice through hands-on training, analysing case studies and your dissertationconnect with our global network of research partnerships, alumni and professionalsenjoy guest lectures, career events, and the opportunity to do a research placement.

Entry requirements

For international students

Degree requirements- You should normally have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above. Applicants with a lower second-class (2.2) degree classification will be considered on a case by case basis. Subject-specific requirements- Your qualification should normally be in anthropology or another humanities or social sciences subject; alternatively, you should have relevant professional experience or engagement. 

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
