The brain is the most complex of all organs – every day we learn more about how it works, and how this knowledge can be applied in a range of settings, including academia and industry. Whether you have a background in neuroscience or not, this course can be tailored to suit you. If you have limited knowledge of neuroscience, you will begin with Foundations in Neuroscience to develop an understanding of important concepts. If you already have knowledge of the fundamentals of neuroscience, we offer the opportunity to explore specific topics in more detail and also modules in other disciplines including business, marketing and psychology to enable the application of your knowledge to a future career.
You'll be taught by clinical and non-clinical neuroscientists, internationally-renowned researchers exploring important themes in the field, including learning and memory, neurodegeneration, psychiatric disorders, pain, and anaesthesia. You'll also have the opportunity to combine these topics with aspects of psychology, business and/or marketing (taught by expert staff in these fields), allowing you to take your neuroscience knowledge in a different direction. This flexible approach will prepare you for a range of future careers. Following the taught component of the course, you'll design and complete a research project. This will be a laboratory- or industry-based research project either in Dundee or on placement in one of our commercial or not-for-profit partner organisations.
Careers
The flexibility of this course will enable you to take your neuroscience knowledge and apply it to the career path you choose in the future. The opportunity for a placement in a research lab or one of our commercial or not-for-profit partner organisations will help you develop transferable skills you can apply to a future career, as well as gain an understanding of how these academic or industrial organisations operate. As an understanding of neuroscience is beneficial in a number of settings, you may use the skills developed on the course to provide a competitive advantage for job applications in a variety of sectors. For example, consumer or marketing neuroscience is a growing area for recruitment. If you intend to further your career academically, this course is an excellent stepping stone to a neuroscience-related PhD programme and additional postgraduate research. This could help you attain a career in academic or industry-based research.
