What will I learn?

Sports & Sporting Events ResearchWe are particularly interested in the social scientific and cultural analysis of sport and sport events, and welcome PhD applications related to these topics.Our scope of interest includes sport as a force for good sport for development and peace sport, health and wellbeing and sport and human rights.Our research activities are immersed within UWS's Centre for Culture, Sport and Events (CCSE) is one of the most prominent research centres in this area in Scotland having returned high quality outputs to both REF2014 and REF2021.Staff in CCSE have significant experience in the study of major and mega events and their social legacies. This includes investigation of the impacts of mega events like the Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup and Commonwealth Games.Recent projects in this thematic area include UK-Canada collaborative research on leveraging parasport events for sustainable community participation, and EventRights, exploring the impact of major sporting events on human rights.

Entry requirements

For international students

The minimum entry requirement for registration to the degree of MRes, MPhil, or MRes/MPhil with the intention of transferring to PhD is a first or second-class Honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent qualification. Applicants with other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis, taking into account the nature and scope of the proposed programme of work.
