What will I learn?

This project lies within the field of environmental engineering and water science, focusing on advanced treatment technologies for the removal of hazardous chemicals from wastewater. With increasing concern over persistent contaminants such as PFAS, there is a growing need for effective strategies to prevent their release into sewer systems and the wider environment. Addressing pollution at the point of entry represents a proactive and sustainable approach, aligning with current regulatory pressures and industry demands to safeguard water quality and public health The project aims to evaluate innovative adsorption-based treatment technologies for the removal of hazardous contaminants prior to sewer discharge. Through pilot-scale experimentation, the research will compare the performance of a novel adsorbent material with conventional granular activated carbon under controlled conditions. The work will assess treatment efficiency across different water sources and operational parameters, including varying empty bed contact times, to identify optimal configurations for practical implementation.Cranfield Water Science Institute is internationally recognised for its expertise in water science and engineering, offering state-of-the-art research facilities and strong industry links. This project is supported by the UK water industry through Isle Utilities, a global innovation consultancy that connects technology providers with water companies. The collaboration ensures that the research is aligned with real-world challenges and provides direct engagement with industry stakeholders.The research is expected to generate valuable insights into the effectiveness and operational feasibility of emerging treatment technologies for hazardous chemical removal. Outcomes will inform the development of practical solutions for controlling pollutant discharge at source, supporting the water sector in improving environmental protection and regulatory compliance while advancing the adoption of innovative treatment approaches This project offers a unique opportunity to work on an applied, industry-driven challenge with direct relevance to the UK water sector. The student will gain hands-on experience with pilot-scale systems, engage with industry partners, and contribute to a nationally significant research programme. Opportunities may also arise to present findings at conferences, collaborate with external partners, and access specialist training within Cranfield’s water research environment The student will develop a strong combination of technical and transferable skills, including experimental design, data analysis, and process evaluation. In addition, they will gain experience in problem-solving within an industry context, scientific communication, and stakeholder engagement.
