Our PhD Film & Screen Media programme enables you to carry out an in-depth piece of research before either writing a full 80,000-word thesis or completing a practice-based dissertation.
The programme is designed to allow students with a background in the humanities or social sciences to develop critical, methodological and practical skills and knowledge by developing original research in the field of film and screen media. The research expertise of supervisors on the programme includes film history and culture, television studies, new media, and socially engaged film practice, as well as the studies of gender, sexuality and race, transnationalism, and global cinemas.
Film & Screen Media at the University of Manchester offers students an extensive interdisciplinary environment unique in the Northwest. Students benefit from the Drama & Film Department’s vibrant research community, including guest seminars, workshops, project development sessions and methods training. To develop their methodological and practical skills, students also have the opportunity to audit relevant courses from the MA in Film Studies, such as Film Theories.
