What will I learn?

Our aim is to help you become a committed, confident and creative teacher so we’ll train you in the essential tools you need to kick-start your career in education, covering the 11-16 age range, in secondary age phase, with post-16 enhancement. As you progress, you’ll increase your ability to handle the ever-evolving teaching environment, and by the time your course is complete, you’ll be in a position to continue developing your understanding, knowledge and skills throughout your professional life. Taught modules, assignments and School Based Training are structured around the development of your Progress Journal which demonstrates your progress against our ITE Core Curriculum. Our ambitious curriculum incorporates the the Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Framework – ITTECF (January 2024) and the nationally agreed competences - the Teachers’ Standards, which all teachers must meet throughout their career. In line with DfE requirements, we have designed Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP) sessions for this course. ITaP elements enable you to focus on specific and pivotal areas of the ITE curriculum – such as assessment, transitions and adaptive teaching – in an intensive way and so develop the skills and knowledge to draw together evidence-based theory and practice. We map your development as a subject specialist with reference to identified subject priorities appropriate to the needs of secondary teachers entering the profession. Our systems for continuous improvement, development and assessment of your progress will support your growing ability to take responsibility for your own professional development and ensure that you approach QTS with a sound understanding of research-informed pedagogies and practices.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants are normally expected to have a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree or a Masters degree in a relevant subject from a UK higher education institution or equivalent.
Please note: If you are a graduate and wish to train as a Science with Biology teacher but your degree did not provide any or enough biology content for you to gain automatic entry on to a secondary Science with Biology teacher training course, you may be required to complete an appropriate Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course.
Applicants will also need to complete the relevant safeguarding checks for this course.
All applicants will be interviewed.
Applicants for this course also need GCSE English Language or English Literature and GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above prior to enrolment. We accept a range of qualifications in lieu of GCSEs for our Initial Teacher Training courses.
English language requirements:
IELTS 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in each band, or equivalent
TOEFL iBT: Overall 95 (Reading 24, Listening 20, Writing 24, Speaking 25)
