What will I learn?

The Mexican-American Studies program at Palo Alto College offers engaging courses that focus on various aspects of Mexican-American culture including history, literature, politics, language and art. These courses promote critical thinking skills and prepare students to be global citizens in our rapidly-changing society. The Mexican-American/Latino population will be the majority of people in Texas by the year 2025. With the U.S. Latina/o population expected to triple by 2050, now is a critical time to learn the skills to effectively prepare for this signi cant population shift. The MAS program provides students with these skills through courses that provide a deep understanding of the complex history and issues relevant to this population. The Center for Mexican-American Studies (CMAS) provides year-round educational programming for the campus and surrounding community including PAC’s annual Heritage Month Celebration, which brings renowned scholars, educators, writers, visual artists, musicians and community organizations to the Palo Alto College campus. The CMAS also offers scholarships for MAS majors. The MAS Program also sponsors the Somos MAS student organization, which promotes student leadership and civic engagement both on and off campus. Students do not have to be a MAS major to join. This program is a THECB-approved Field of Study, which means all coursework completed on the degree plan will fully transfer to satisfy the first two years of a Mexican-American Studies degree at any four-year public college or university in Texas.
