Math. History. Art. Explore a range of subjects and prepare to teach them in elementary school - or explore other careers connected to education. The EDLS major integrates education, history, science, sociology, and psychology to deliver a liberal arts education that focuses on social justice, critical thinking, cross-cultural awareness, and problem-solving.Courses cover the subjects that elementary teachers teach - from physical fitness to math to art - with additional courses that deepen your understanding of the cultural, psychological, and developmental contexts that shape individual learners. Students will- Synthesize subject content in the liberal arts with practices and theories of humanizing education. Investigate structural issues impacting education, with a particular emphasis on dynamics of social justice such as race, gender, sexuality, class, along with differences in learning and language. Design lessons that engage and support multilingual, diverse students, developing leadership and meaningful advocacy skills.
