What will I learn?

A four-year degree, the Bachelor of Music comprises intensive work with world-class artist-teachers and unrivaled performance opportunities. Students hone their musical skills in every type of classical setting from solo to large ensembles. The Bachelor of Music is a professional degree awarded by Rice University. It is designed for those students seeking intensive study in their major area to prepare for a career in the music profession. The BMus program consists of a core curriculum (theory, aural skills, and music history), applied study (lessons, ensembles, chamber music, recitals), and keyboard proficiency. Like all Rice undergraduate degrees, it is built on a liberal arts foundation: BMus students earn at least 30 credit hours in humanities, social sciences and natural sciences and engineering.

Official high school transcript in English (or a certified English translation): Students who have elected to take time off from schooling between graduating from high school and enrolling in college are considered first-year applicants. Completion of a high school diploma (or an equivalent) prior to enrolment is required for all new incoming studentsRecommendation Letters: School Counsellor, Teacher 1, Teacher 2. Applicants interested in Shepherd School of Music must submit additional materials depending on their area of study. All application materials must be completed by December 1. Music applicants are not eligible to apply through QuestBridge, Early Decision I or Early Decision II. Admitted students must pursue the music program for at least one year before changing schools.
