What will I learn?

Old Dominion University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene. This entry-level degree program in dental hygiene encompasses two years of pre-requisite and general education courses followed by two years of dental hygiene theory and practice, community oral health, research methodology, and teaching strategies. Upon completion of the dental hygiene program, graduates are eligible to take the Dental Hygiene National Board Examination as well as the regional and state board examinations to become licensed dental hygienists. The program is offered in-person and on campus only. A dental hygienist is a licensed professional and member of the oral health care team who provides services to promote optimal oral health. Dental hygienists serve as clinical practitioners, educators, researchers, administrators, managers, program developers, consultants, and/or dental product sales representatives, depending on the individual's employment setting and educational background. In addition, dental hygienists with a bachelor's degree may pursue careers in elementary and secondary schools, community and public health settings, institutional, entrepreneurial and industrial dental hygiene, professional education, and research.
