The Department of Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) explores the myriad contributions of Latin Americans and Latinx people to the global community. The department’s programs emphasize the profound linkages that have emerged between Latin America and the United States, particularly through the construction of Latinx communities in the U.S. We also critically analyze the complex intersections with Indigenous, African, European, Semitic, Arab, and Asian communities throughout the Americas. This interdisciplinary department cultivates critical thinking on gender, sexuality, language, race, ethnicity, class, religion and indigeneity, and it emphasizes community engagement and social justice pedagogies and scholarship. Our programs equip students with much needed cultural competences that will prepare them well for leadership positions in both the public and private sectors and/or for work in graduate education.
