What will I learn?

The Master of Arts in Studio Art program at Eastern Michigan University aims to provide a stimulating environment for the post-undergraduate study of art and design. The M.A. curriculum consists of studio courses and seminars designed to encourage experimentation and critical thinking. Students are instrumental in defining their creative work’s focus and direction the faculty provides opportunities for growth and development within a particular area while also encouraging cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary work and experiences. Through art history and seminar courses, M.A. students explore the diverse cultural influences on art, the role of the artist in society, and the relationship between studio practices and art and design history. The M.A. degree in studio art culminates in a solo or small group exhibition.

Entry requirements

For international students

A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution. In addition, a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program, is required for full admission. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission.

Applicants must also meet the following program criteria:

Have an undergraduate degree with a major in art, with a minimum grade point average of 2.8 in art classes
