Many employers consider a master’s degree in mechanical engineering essential. Perhaps that is because mechanical engineers are called on to consider so many factors as they design tools and processes to keep society moving forward.

In response to these demands, the Lawrence Tech mechanical engineering faculty in consultation with industry advisors have developed an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to keep you current with technical advances and improve your communication skills, enhancing your opportunities for success in the workplace.

The comprehensive curriculum prepares you for careers in fields such as combustion engines, emissions, energy systems, manufacturing processes and systems, structural analysis, powertrain systems, dynamics, vibrations, thermal sciences and fluid mechanics.

Timing and Options

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering is a 30-credit-hour program with courses offered in the evenings so that you can complete your degree while working full time. The degree is usually completed in one to two years.

Depending on your goals, you can choose:

a coursework-only option requiring four core courses and six electives
a thesis option requiring four core courses and three electives plus a thesis based on your interests

For your core courses, you can choose to focus on solid mechanics or thermal-fluid systems. You can select electives from multiple areas, or concentrate on:

  • Solid mechanics, dynamics and vibration systems

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (or technical related field) (minimum GPA of 3.0).

For international students

Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. institution OR a non-U.S. degree equivalent to a four-year U.S. baccalaureate degree from a college or university of government recognized standing; A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (or technical related field) (minimum GPA of 3.0).

The following English proficiency test scores are required for students for whom English is a second language: 79 on the TOEFL iBT; 6.0 on the IELTS; 105 on the Duolingo English Test for graduate students.
