What will I learn?

Students who complete the Master's degree will have been provided with: the knowledge and skills to be informed, active scholars in a wide range of communities, within and outside institutions of higher education the ability to identify social justice issues and propose a theoretical or practical approach that is appropriate to addressing those issues the ability to connect and employ both academic and broader public discourses about social justice the knowledge and skills to articulate the ethical, political, and social significance of a wide range of texts the training necessary to pursue further academic study, to work in higher education, and to employ advanced research and writing skills in careers outside of academia. Our two-year M.A. program enables students to develop a critical framework for understanding and evaluating the ethical, political, and formal aspects of texts within and across diverse historical and cultural contexts.

Entry requirements

For international students

  1. a statement of purpose
  2. an official transcript or transcripts, for all college-level coursework
  3. three letters of recommendation from instructors familiar with the applicant's undergraduate work in English
  4. a writing sample of 12–15 pages of academic prose on literature or a related topic (e.g. film, cultural studies, etc). For most applicants, the writing sample is a revised essay previously submitted for undergraduate coursework or a selection from an undergraduate thesis.
