The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at SMU offers two doctoral programs, one in Electrical Engineering and one in Computer Engineering. These research-intensive programs allow students to work closely with faculty advisors on solving challenging problems. Our world-renowned faculty focus on both theoretical and applied research that can make a significant impact on society. Students in the doctoral program frequently publish their research in top publications in their fields.Students in Lyle’s Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering program learn from faculty experts whose research areas- in photonics, cognitive wireless networks, statistical signal processing, intelligent systems and more- cover each dynamic element of Electrical Engineering and opportunities for the future. Doctoral students are expected to attain and demonstrate a mastery of the discipline and to significantly advance the state of knowledge through an original research effort.

Entry requirements
For international students
An M.S. degree in electrical engineering or in a closely related discipline from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association or completion of an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. masters degree from a college or university of recognized standing. Excellent academic performance in all completed coursework, with a minimum GPA 3.000 on a 4.000 scale.
