What will I learn?

The Ph.D. in English offers instruction from faculty involved in innovative research across most traditional fields of literature. It prepares you for teaching and conducting scholarly research at universities, colleges and community colleges and for entering non-academic professions such as journalism and creative writing. As part of the program, you'll explore reciprocal relationships between the past and present, marginal and dominant and literary and non-literary. You'll also be able to tailor the coursework to your specific interests. Choose from cross-disciplinary areas such as gender studies, American Indian studies, visual and digital cultures, comparative modernisms and much more.

Entry requirements

For international students

You must have completed an MA in English (literature). If you have a related degree (such as an MFA in Creative Writing or an MA in American Studies) you will be required to take additional coursework though you may be able to transfer in up to 6 units of graduate course work pertinent to the degree.
You must have a grade-point average of at least 3.0.
Please note that the English Literature Program no longer requires the GRE for admission.
