One of the best food discoveries I’ve made while studying in Australia is açaí. If you haven’t tried it before, it’s like a thick, icy smoothie that tastes a bit like ice cream but is made from açaí berries 😫. You can top it with granola, banana, strawberries, and all sorts of sauces. My favourite mix is Biscoff with pistachio, though I tell myself it’s still healthy if there’s fruit on top!
My friends and I used to grab açaí almost every week after class. It’s refreshing, filling, and honestly just fun to eat while chatting and taking a break from studying. Prices usually sit around $12 to $20, depending on where you go. You can find açaí everywhere now, especially around student areas and coastal spots like Newtown, Bondi, and Circular Quay. Whenever I have friends visiting from overseas, I always bring them to try it. It’s like a mini Sydney tradition for me‼️
Açaí has become my comfort and my go-to study snack. It’s the perfect mix of energy and sweetness that keeps me going through long study sessions. And when I start missing food from home, I still love exploring all the little cafes and restaurants around the city that serve dishes from different cultures. Sydney’s food scene makes it so easy to find both something new and something that reminds you of home. 💕
The two food item that I have grown used to here while studying abroad is Chai(milk tea) and sushi. One is home comfort food and the latter I just tried after I came here and loved it.
Funny thing I learned is that many Indian students don't like sushi but I loved it. I have tried different ones in that like Teriyaki, spicy chicken and so on. It was different as where I come from you eat rice as a meal whether lunch or dinner but here I found it as a filling snack 😋😋😋😋. It cost from $6 - $12 normally, also some places sell boxes of 6 pieces that are as cheap as $6 making it quite budget friendly
I would always take some with me to Uni to have in between classes. Also as I'm in Melbourne I've grown used to coffee it's a go to thing as the coffee culture os super rich here and you get it as cheap as $2 in 7-eleven
As for Chai, I prefer making it home by myself. I did try out in restaurant etc but it never felt that good. I would make it by boiling it with some crushed ginger and cardamom which gave it a rich taste and it's refreshing no matter which part of the day you have it 🙂↕️🤗🤗.
A very good drink if your coming home from a long day and don't really feel like eating proper dinner. Even getting all of these ingredients will cost you not more than $30 and it will last for more than 1 month.
These few things have really helped making my journey as an international student a bit more fun and exciting 😄😄
