New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has risen nearly 50 places over the last two years, to be ranked 97th in America. NJIT has now joined the top 100 national universities for 2020 in the annual U.S. News and World Report, assessing colleges and universities across the nation. Reflecting the institutions impressive teaching standards, staff have worked hard to improve the academic and social experience of students studying at NJIT.
The U.S. News and World Report decides its rankings based on a number of important different aspects, including outcomes, faculty resources, financial resources, student excellence, expert opinion and alumni giving. NJIT has seen impressive rises in student retention and graduation rates. Student applications have jumped from 4,300 in 2013 to more than 9,000 in 2019. This is in part down to the huge investments that have been made in teaching staff and research. In recent years, 150 new faculty members have been hired to facilitate more intimate class numbers of 20 or less to ensure optimum student to teacher contact time.
Over USD 170 million is spent annually on research activity at NJIT, granting New Jersey with an R1 rating in research by the Carnegie Classification. This is the highest possible rating.
Talking of the institution’s success, NJIT President Joel Bloom, said “we now are rated R1 for research by the Carnegie Classification. Forbes ranks us 1st in the nation for the upward economic mobility of our students from the lowest brackets of family income. Financing a degree program can be a concern for international students, and NJIT provides a variety of different funding packages to ensure the financial security of its student community. There are a number of private loans and scholarships available to students of various eligibility requirements, including many which are available to international students.
Lending institutions, such as banks, and private agencies can offer loans at a competitive range of interest rates, and any international student may access these loans if they present an eligible U.S. citizen or permanent resident as a co-signer.
Additional external funding can be sourced through NJIT’s Scholarship Universe online portal, an online tool developed to connect students with relevant, vetted scholarship options based on individual criteria. Scholarship Universe build a profile including their personal information and specific needs and eligibility requirements, which an adaptive matching engine uses to suggest a customised list of scholarship opportunities.
NJIT does offer scholarship awards to lessen the need for further financial assistance. These include the International Presidential Scholarship, an award minus the out-of-state surcharge, which students must apply for with admission to be considered. There is also the Albert Dorman Honors College Scholarship, which is exclusively available to members of Albert Dorman Honours College.
NJIT has a range of entry requirements for international students, who are considered on the basis of their entire academic record with a particular focus on math, science and English grades.
Highest scores obtained on the SAT or ACT are considered by NJIT, using the ‘math + critical reading’ composite, with an expected average of 1190 on the SAT. Those with scores below 1100 are advised to retake and seek a higher mark.
For international students who are not from a native-speaking English country, it is important to prove proficiency via a TOEFL test, with a minimum score of either 79 (internet-based test), 213 (computer-based test) or 550 (paper-based test). A minimum score of 6.0 on the IELTS score will also allow consideration for admission, and non-native speakers will also be required to take a placement test in English when they arrive on campus.
