The University of Illinois Springfield is home to more than 4,600 students from more than 50 countries. Located in Springfield, the capital of Illinois in the Midwestern part of the United States, UIS provides students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in a close-knit community in the state’s capital. Students are encouraged to get involved on campus through participation in clubs and organizations, leadership, and outreach in the Springfield community. UIS offers 15 NCAA Division II sports teams that students are invited to support.
More than 50 undergraduate programs and 30 graduate programs are offered at UIS, taught in small classrooms with a student-centered learning approach. On-campus and online academic programs are available at both undergraduate and graduate levels and opportunities to expand knowledge through minors (undergraduate) and certificates (graduate) are available and encouraged.
The Springfield community supports students through internships and assistantships, as more than 25 percent of the college-educated workforce in the city is a UIS alum. The city offers students the opportunity to explore and relax in the numerous historical sites, local shops and restaurants, plus ample outdoor recreation opportunities. Students who want to explore other areas of the US during breaks can easily do so by taking a train to Chicago or St. Louis, or a short flight to many destination cities from the local airport.
The University of Illinois Springfield was recently recognized in the ‘Research Colleges and Universities’ category by the The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Students at all academic levels, both on campus and online, are encouraged to participate in research opportunities and present their findings at local and national conferences. Some examples of student research opportunities include maritime history, number theory, analyzing stellar explosions with Hubble, green chemistry, and tallgrass prairie restoration.
UIS is also excited to open a custom-designed, state-of-the-art eSports arena for all students to engage in. Thirteen specialized gaming computers are available for students at all levels, whether they are experienced competitive games or have never played before. Additionally, students may relax while playing on other gaming consoles, such as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. One of the competitive esports teams recently won the central region championship playing the video game Overwatch.

While the actual cost to attend may vary from student to student based on academic program and housing options, UIS is dedicated to providing a quality education at an affordable price.
Admitted undergraduate students are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships based on their US equivalent GPA. The scholarships range from USD 3,000 – 7,000 per year.
The Graduate Public Service Internship Program provides experiential learning opportunities for selected students at state and local government agencies. Selected students will receive a waiver for resident tuition and a monthly stipend. There is a separate application for the Graduate Public Service Internship program. Selection is highly competitive.
Graduate Assistantships provide students with graduate-level learning experience while supporting academic departments and offices on campus. Selected students will receive a tuition waiver and monthly stipend. There is a separate application for Graduate Assistantship. Selection is highly competitive. If a student is applying to UIS through an agent, the student is not eligible for a Graduate Assistantship.
International applicants may apply to the Fall or Spring semesters and admission decisions are made year-round. All students must provide UIS with an official copy of their academic transcript(s). The transcript(s) must be in English and be evaluated either by a member of the UIS staff (USD 150 credential evaluation fee will be charged) or by an approved evaluation company (costs will vary). Additionally, if English is not an official language of the student’s country of citizenship, English proficiency exam results must be provided.

The University of Illinois Springfield is dedicated to fully engaging students in the process of active teaching and learning. Through small classes, students can develop close relationships with faculty who not only know their name, but also their strengths and their goals.
Students will never have large lecture style classes at UIS: the average class size is 15 and no classes are larger than 50. More than 60 percent of classes have fewer than 20 students.
86 percent of faculty hold a terminal degree within their field of study at UIS and courses are taught by faculty, not teacher assistants. If students choose to enroll in an online program, the courses are taught by the same faculty who teach on campus, ensuring that every learner benefits from the same excellent standard of education.

UIC College of Nursing
Located on the UIS Campus, the college provides opportunities for students to pursue a career in nursing-related fields. The UIC College of Nursing undergraduate program ranks 13th in the nation, according to US News and World Report.
The University of Illinois Springfield is the newest university in Illinois and has been designed with students in mind. The classrooms are small, allowing students to actively interact with faculty and fellow students. State-of-the-art technology provides students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning, preparing them for post-graduation opportunities.
UIS provides on-campus housing for more than 1,000 students each year. Undergraduate first and second year students are required to live on campus. Upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students are encouraged to live on campus.
In 2025, on-campus housing costs range from USD 4,015 – 6,252 per semester. The costs include utilities (water, electricity, internet), furnished living spaces, and access to laundry services.
The UIS Field Station, situated on Lake Springfield, is located within walking distance from campus, providing students and faculty from all disciplines with a space for hands-on, field-based learning.
UIS is also proud to be part of the floodplain restoration at the Emiquon Preserve. Located about an hour and a half from campus, the Therkildsen Field Station provides exciting scientific opportunities for researchers and valuable learning experiences for students.
UIS encourages students to get involved in various campus activities outside of the classroom. Through intramural sports, club teams, and individual initiatives, students can maintain a healthy lifestyle through the offerings of the campus recreational areas. Some of the intramural sports and club teams students may participate in include basketball, pickleball, futsal, and cricket.
