So, you have your heart set on applying to one of the top-ranked universities in the world. We say go for it, as ambition should never be discouraged. Of course, as an international student, you’ll have to show strong academic achievement and the required English language level. This is where your IELTS result is critical. We guide you through what IELTS scores you need for acceptance at some of the most prestigious institutions.
Is there a difference between undergraduate and postgraduate IELTS score requirements?
Often, but not always, there is a difference between requirements at different levels of study. The extent of this varies across top institutions, but usually comes down to postgraduate qualifications needing a higher IELTS score.
Remember that if you have studied at an English-medium university at undergraduate level, you may not be required to submit an IELTS score. Again, this isn’t the case at every top institution, and can depend on the country in which you previously studied. It is always best to contact universities directly to get the exact details and requirements.

Does the IELTS score I need differ depending on the subject I study?
This can be the case, so you should always check with university admissions offices. Popular subjects with significant language components, such as those in the humanities and social sciences, business, education, and some medical specialisations often require a higher IELTS score.
If you intend to study for a master’s degree by research only, you will independently develop and write a full dissertation in English. Therefore, your IELTS score will usually need to be higher than it would for a master’s degree that combines coursework, assignments, and examinations.
