Whatever your study subject, you are sure to find a suitable course at a university in the UK. The country's many top-class institutions have almost every base covered, with some even focusing on very specific areas of learning. Often, these institutions are leaders in their fields, carrying high rankings and strong reputations. Get to know some of them now, as we explore the best specialist universities in the UK.

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

The field of health and medicine is as wide as it is important. As such, its many specialisms are given significant attention, and this is exemplified by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Founded in 1899, it is firmly established as one of the world's top universities for public health.

The institution has long played an important role in the development of health policy and treatment in the UK and beyond. For example, researchers here were the first to show the link between cigarettes and lung cancer, leading to significant changes in attitudes and laws.

Further afield, LSHTM continues to be at the forefront of fights against diseases such as malaria and Ebola. Its global outlook is clear – international students account for more than half of enrolments.

Find out how you can make a big difference in medicine with our reasons to study public health.

University of Law

Budding barristers are well placed at the simply named University of Law. With more than 16,000 students, the institution is the largest law school in the UK. It offers a wide range of legal courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational level, as well as ones in other subjects.

Some of these are closely linked to the legal system, such as criminology and policing, while others are more distinct. Psychology, computer science and marketing are just a few examples. However, law remains at the university's core. Underlining its strong reputation, it provides training to 91 of the world's top 100 law firms.

Among the institution's many advantages is its presence in many locations. It has seven campuses in cities across England – including two in London – as well as one in Hong Kong, and a bespoke online offering. What's more, it also runs courses on the campuses of several affiliated universities. These include the University of Liverpool, the University of Sheffield and GISMA University in Berlin.

London Business School

The MBA awarded by the London Business School is one of the most respected qualifications of its kind. According to the QS Global MBA Rankings 2025, it is the best in Europe, and the fifth-best in the world. If you want to be an industry leader, there are few better places to study.

Here, your education in enterprise will be delivered by business leaders with big links across one of the world's financial capitals. Faculty members include numerous notable company directors and government consultants. What's more, your coursemates will bring experience from across the planet. Nine in ten MBA students at the school are international.

You'll find some great alternatives to this institution among the top universities for business in the UK.

Harper Adams University

The study of animals and agriculture is the focus of this rural university, whose main campus is located on a 494-hectare farm. It is ideally placed and resourced to train the vets, land managers and agrifood specialists needed in a changing world. While its 125 years of teaching are built on millennia of knowledge, it works hard to stay at the forefront of new developments.

This is exemplified by its undergraduate degrees in Environmental Management and Sustainability, and Wildlife Conservation and Ecology. Both offer a firm foundation in the protection of the planet's flora and fauna, preparing you for a professional future in the green fields. Undoubtedly, this is a great place to get started.

Harper Adams has finished first in the Career Prospects category at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards on the past eight occasions. With that added to its ranking of 33rd on the Complete University Guide League Tables, the institution's strength is clear. Although there are other great agricultural specialist universities in the UK – such as Hartpury and the Royal Agricultural University – this one leads the way.

BIMM University

As it is a global cultural capital, it may not be surprising to read that there are a number of specialist universities in the UK for performing arts students. These sometimes focus on particular areas such as drama or music, but can also be homes for creative learners of all kinds. This is the case with BIMM University.

Established in the seaside city of Brighton less than 25 years ago, BIMM has expanded rapidly. Today, it teaches courses across the creative industries at several locations in the UK, Ireland and Germany. Specifically, it divides itself into six schools, including BIMM Music Institute, MetFilm School and the Northern Ballet School.

Graduates have gone on to top charts, grace the stage and offer technical innovation at a high level worldwide. Its 8,000 students come from 60 different countries, making this a truly international institution. Wherever you want to make your career – be it centre stage or behind the scenes – BIMM will start it right.

Loughborough University

While it is technically not a specialist university, Loughborough is the place to go for student athletes in the UK. Placing first for sports studies in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the institution boasts cutting-edge facilities that produce world-class competitors. If it were a country, it would have placed 16th on the Paris Olympics medal table.

Many of the sporting stars at the university are funded by generous scholarships, but these are not reserved for the elite. Notably, the institution's International Scholarships offer 25 per cent off first-year tuition fees to students from outside of the UK. Around 2,300 are currently enrolled, helping make Loughborough a welcoming place for everyone – whatever their study track or field.

Bishop Grosseteste University

Found in the historic city of Lincoln, Bishop Grosseteste has been a key driver of teacher training in the UK since 1862. Today, it offers courses in a broad range of subjects, but continues to specialise in education. This distinguishes it from almost every other university in the country.

Many of its students qualify as teachers on its PGCE courses. Short for Postgraduate Certificate in Education, this is the most common route to becoming a teacher in the UK. Bishop Grosseteste has options for both primary and secondary school educators, as well as a PGDE (Postgraduate Diploma in Education) for teaching over-16s.

Of course, good teachers are the product of good teaching, and this is something you are sure to find here. The institution places in the UK's top 10 for teaching quality and career prospects, according to Whatuni Student Choice Awards voters.

London Interdisciplinary School

It might sound counterintuitive, but not all specialist universities in the UK focus on a particular subject. Uniquely, the London Interdisciplinary School is dedicated to distilling the insights of academia in its entirety. At this highly innovative institution, you can earn a postgraduate or undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies.

In doing so, you will take a problem-based approach to learning, absorbing perspectives from every area of scholarly thought. Climate change, inequality and AI ethics are among the areas you can tackle, with a broad mind being strongly encouraged. As you develop your ability to see things from many points of view, you will gain a versatility that will take you a long way.
