What will I learn?

Within this degree, you will develop skills in self-expression and creative problem solving to generate art work. You will be encouraged to participate in contemporary culture, engaging directly with Tasmania’s internationally acclaimed arts culture through our ongoing partnerships with festivals and arts institutions across the state. You will be provided with opportunities to actively contribute to the cultural life of our society and interact with both Australian and international visiting artists.

You will gain an awareness of your own creative practice and the role and function of visual art and design within contemporary culture. You can choose from a range of selected units, which will provide a foundation for further study in fine art and/or enable you to encounter and develop skills in diverse art disciplines.

With facilities close to the centre of both Hobart and Launceston, you will have access to world class workshop facilities with generous allocations of studio working space, staffed by dedicated practising artists and designers. Studios are available in Ceramics, Drawing, Object Design, Painting, Photography, Photomedia, Printmaking, Sculpture, Textiles, Time Based Media, and Visual Communication, while units in Critical Practices connect theory and practice through making.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify broad theoretical and technical knowledge about the diverse contexts (e.g. social, cultural and historical) that inform all aspects of art practice.
  • Demonstrate theoretical, technical and communication skills essential to art practice through the analysis of ideas, artefacts, and knowledge, and the evaluation and application of the critical commentary of others
  • Exercise judgement in developing cognitive and technical skills, and provide solutions to sometimes complex problems and to deliver resolved art works.
  • Develop a self-defined creative practice and/or inquiry that is autonomous and demonstrates knowledge of professional and safe work practices.
