What will I learn?

About this courseThe shift to digital media has created profound changes in the ways we understand the world around us. This degree will ask you to think about the ways in which digital cultures have changed the way we live and work, how we relate to the environment and to each other, how digital platforms have transformed how audiences now produce and consume film, television, and other media. You'll be part of a thriving student film culture, including a student film society and TV channel, and have the chance to show your own work as part of the annual Southampton Student Film Festival. Analytical thinking, critical appreciation, and a deep knowledge of formal techniques will prepare you for a rewarding career in the ever-evolving landscape of film and media. Some pathways include Film or Television critic for newspapers, magazines, blogs, or broadcast media Content creator/producer for online or print magazines, podcasting or television shows Screenwriter Media distribution and exhibition Festival organisation or curation, as well as different roles in the GLAM sector. Key features of the course:- Join a Film department that is 2nd in the UK for research quality, Complete University Guide 2026.- Hands-on learning with opportunities to take part in industry projects.- Access specialist streaming services including Box of Broadcasts, BFI Player and Kanopy and an on-campus cinema.- Study and research through cutting-edge technology at the Digital Humanities facilities, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre. Student support You’ll be taught by supportive experts who know you as an individual. Small-group seminars and personal tutors will help you build confidence. Entry requirements

For international students

A-levels: ABB including an essay writing subject. International Baccalaureate Diploma: Pass with 32 points overall including 16 at Higher Level (offers exclude General Studies and Critical Thinking); qualifying essay writing subjects include English Literature, English Language and Literature, History, Philosophy, Film Studies, Law, Geography, Politics, Classical Civilisation, Religious Studies, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Modern European Foreign Languages, and Drama and Theatre Studies. RQF BTEC: Distinction, Distinction in the National Extended Diploma plus B in an A-level essay writing subject; Distinction, Distinction in the National Diploma plus B in an A-level essay writing subject; or Distinction in the National Extended Certificate plus AB including an A-level essay writing subject. QCF BTEC: Distinction, Distinction in the Extended Diploma plus B in an A-level essay writing subject; Distinction, Distinction in the Diploma plus B in an A-level essay writing subject; or Distinction in the Subsidiary Diploma plus AB including an A-level essay writing subject. GCSE requirements: English language (or English) and mathematics at minimum grade 4/C.
