Mathematical Physics (MMath) - MMath

UK

What will I learn?

Mathematics is the language that underpins our understanding of the universe. On this degree, you will explore how mathematical theory and physics come together to explain everything from subatomic particles to the structure of the cosmos.\\You will study the deep connection between maths and theoretical physics, learning how abstract ideas can be used to model and predict real-world phenomena. From quantum field theory to astrophysics, you will engage with concepts that sit at the frontier of modern science.\\Taught jointly by Mathematical Sciences and Physics and Astronomy through the STAG research centre, your learning is shaped by experts working in areas such as particle physics, gravitation and string theory. You will graduate with advanced technical and analytical skills that are highly valued across science, industry and research.\\**Key features of the course**\\Explore advanced topics such as particle physics, astrophysics and quantum field theory, linking mathematics to real physical systems\\Build a strong foundation in calculus, linear algebra, vector calculus and partial differential equations\\Learn how to construct mathematical models and apply them to complex physical problems\\Choose to specialise in areas such as particle physics, astrophysics or condensed matter\\Develop practical skills using computational tools such as Python and the statistics package R\\Study material at the cutting edge of the field, including topics typically introduced at master’s level\\Be part of a collaborative research environment through the STAG centre, a leader in theoretical physics research\\**Student support**\\Your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) will support you throughout your time at Southampton, offering guidance on your studies, career planning and access to wider support services when needed.\\You will also have access to a dedicated maths student centre, providing a space to study, collaborate and connect with your course community.**Further information**\\Mathematics graduates from Southampton are in high demand, valued for their problem-solving and analytical skills. Career paths include roles such as mathematician, statistician, actuary and financial analyst, with graduates working for organisations including Deloitte, IBM, Amazon and Formula 1 teams.\\On average, graduates earn £36,700, with over 97% in employment or further study within 15 months (Graduate Outcomes 2022 to 2023, published 2025).
